MONORAIL

Monorail is a form of rubber guided system normally used where elevated system is required. The support wheels runs on top of a single narrow concrete beam and the guide wheels run along the vertical faces of the beam on both sides. Guidance is provided by a set of small horizontal rubber tyre wheels running along a vertical central guide or two vertical guides, one on either side of the concrete way. The vehicle can be coupled and formed into trains of different lengths to suit the traffic requirements. The carrying capacity of Monorail is up to 40,000 (forty thousand) passengers per hour in the peak direction.

HISTORY OF MONORAIL

The first passenger carrying monorail celebrated a grand opening on June 25th, 1825. It had a one-horse power engine. Based on 1821 patent by Henry Robinson Palmer, the Cheshunt Railway was actually built to carry bricks, but made monorail history by carrying passengers at its opening.

 

From then, till today many improvements have taken place like Suspended Monorail, Monorail with steel wheels running on wooden rafters and the present Hybrid Monorail runs with rubber tyres on concrete beams.
